Sunscreen is crucial to protecting the skin from premature ageing and minimising risks of skin cancer. Our encapsulated sunscreen filters are elegant, sensitive skin safe and work beautifully under makeup.
2 Types of DNA Repair Enzymes
2 Types of DNA Repair Enzymes | Photolyase | Endoneuclease
Even with diligent sunscreen use, some UV still gets through and harms your skin at the DNA level. That’s where DNA repair enzymes come in, helping reduce the risk of long-term sun damage, premature ageing, and even pre-cancers.
Antioxidants
Working to neutralise free radicals responsible for contributing to oxidative stress and DNA damage, the addition of plant flavonoid antioxidants protects the skin a step further and gives an overall radiance.

Clincally Proven Protection
Prevents Cellular Senescence, Inflammation, and the Breakdown of Collagen and Fibrillin for Younger, Healthier Skin
We tested Age Defence with advanced gene expression testing in 3D human skin equivalents to measure its true impact on epigenetic ageing, cellular senescence and oxidative stress; three key biological pathways. This research was independently carried out by Professor Mark Birch-Machin, a Professor of molecular dermatology and widely recognised as a leading expert in UV-induced cellular damage to human skin and skin ageing.
The Results
Professor Birch Machin found:
Giving statistically significant protection against UV-induced P21 expression*
Complete reduction of PTGES expression to baseline levels following UV exposure*
Prevents the UV-induced spike in MMP1*
The Skin Diary Age Defence Moisturising Day Cream is proven for statistically significant protection against UV-induced epigenetic activity, supporting the role of our formula in modulating the skin’s biological ageing pathways.
What is Cell Senescence
Cellular senescence is a key driver of ageing and one of the primary targets for skin regeneration. Senescent cells (or zombie cells) are retired; they stay alive but stop dividing and repairing themselves. These retired cells release inflammation, which can affect neighbouring cells.
They don’t function as they should, but they don’t die quietly, either. Instead, they hang around like a bad apple in a fruit down, slowly spreading dysfunction to the cells around them. This can result in a breakdown of collagen and elastin (fibrillin) production, inflammation, impaired skin cell renewal and age-related decline in regenerative capacity.
These ‘retired’ senescent cells build up and contribute to what we see as visible ageing. This molecular process starts a long time before the visible ageing appears, which is where prevention comes in. Minimising UV-induced cellular senescence in the skin is a great way to slow skin ageing.
What is Inflammageing?
Inflammageing is a slowly progressing, low-grade systemic inflammation that can lead to tissue damage and conditions associated with premature ageing. By focusing on protection from DNA repair enzymes, the goal is to reduce that inflammation and subsequent ageing factors.
Inflammageing is often considered a consequence of immunosenescence, which is the gradual decline of the immune system. A weakened immune system over time, limits the skin’s ability to repair itself and can lead to senescent cells, which increases overall inflammation. This creates an inflammatory environment, contributing to inflammageing.
Collagen & Fibrilins Role in Skin Ageing
Collagen is an abundant protein giving our skin its volume and strength. Fibrillin-rich microfibrils act as scaffolds for our skin’s elastic fibre formation, which is necessary for skin elasticity and resilience.
As we age, our collagen naturally degrades and our fibrillin can become damaged through various factors. They are not easily restored once the degradation has happened, but we do know that protection (sunscreen), retinoids (Night Repair Therapy) and restoration (DNA Repair Enzymes) work to restore both in photoaged skin.
DNA Repair Enzymes
Active Photo Protection
These are smart little repairing agents that look for DNA damage caused by UV damage in order to fix them. We use two repair enzymes in Age Defence.
Endonuclease
UV-endonuclease enzymes (DNA repair enzymes) scans our DNA for errors caused by UV damage and once it finds this damage, it triggers your body's own DNA repair processes.
Photolyase
Photolyases are light-activated DNA repair enzymes that find abnormalities in DNA shapes. Once it finds damage, it waits for a beam of sunlight, which kicks it into activation mode, repairing the damaged DNA.
Encapsulation Technology
Sunscreen Filters
DNA Repair Enzymes
Our sunscreen filters are encapsulated in three spheres of water, oil, water formulation meaning the molecules sit beautifully on the skin, never passing the skin barrier for those worried about systemic absorption. This delivers all of the benefits of broad-spectrum sunscreen without feeling like a traditional heavy sunscreen.
These clever encapsulated spheres are negatively charged, meaning they sit on your skin deflecting each other, forming a perfect grid of protection instead of ‘clumping’ together (flocculating), which is common in sunscreen formulas.
Our DNA repair enzymes are encapsulated in 3 phospholipids, one of which is pH sensitive. Each nano particle is small enough to pass through the outer layer of your skin. The encapsulation protects the DNA repair enzymes until they get to the deeper layers of your skin where the pH sensitive lipid destabilises and releases the enzyme to work at repairing DNA damage.

FAQs
Does it pair well with Night Repair Therapy?
Absolutely! Night Repair Therapy and Age Defence are our hardworking duo that keeps your skin in a state of protection and repair day or night.
Does it work well under makeup?
Yes, it sits beautifully under makeup offering all-day hydration. Can be worn alone or under makeup.
Can I use another antioxidant alongside Age Defence?
If you want to, you can use a separate antioxidant product before applying the day cream. However, it’s been designed to offer antioxidant protection as your one-step daytime cream.
What is flocculation?
When you apply sunscreen, many experience flocculation issues (probably without realising it). This means that, despite your best efforts, your application isn’t always even and can clump together. Using encapsulated technology means the sunscreen applies like a protective film over the skin, reducing any gaps and forming a better UVA and UVB protection layer.
Why have you chosen a mildly scented formulation?
The base ingredients, especially the repair enzymes have a distinctive smell. We added a very small amount of fragrance to boost the experience of using this daily.
and designed a formula with the scent of a cream that you’ll look forward to applying every morning. It’s also a clinically proven mood-boosting scent to set your morning off right.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
Our day cream has been shown in independent clinical testing to be suitable for sensitive skin. Our encapsulated filter technology means the sunscreen filters themselves are not in contact with the skin making it suitable for those who are sometimes sensitised by sunscreen filters.
The formulation is mildly fragranced so if you are concerned about any specific allergies or irritation we recommend trialing a small amount first.
Will the DNA repair enzymes get rid of all my sun damage?
As much as we’d love to say yes, unfortunately not all of it. DNA Repair Enzymes can’t erase all past DNA repair, but it can mitigate some DNA damage, helping to correct UV-induced errors before they cause permanent cellular changes. In turn, this also helps reduce the risk of precancerous skin changes.
Is Age Defence a sunscreen?
Age Defence is a day cream that contains broad spectrum sunscreen filters meaning you can wear it as a sunscreen. We just recommend applying a 2 finger length amount to ensure adequate protection and it’s important to reapply throughout the day.
Does Age Defence provide blue light protection?
Blue light (HEVL, 400–500 nm) is part of the visible light spectrum and cannot be effectively blocked by transparent skincare formulations. Only products containing visible light–reflective ingredients, such as iron oxides, provide real HEVL protection. This means true blue light protection requires ingredients that physically reflect visible light.
Antioxidants can help mitigate the damage caused by blue light. Age Defence contains carotenoids, polyphenols and vitamin E to help mitigate oxidative stress caused by blue light and support the skin’s natural defence and repair mechanisms This means our formulation helps skin recover from blue light exposure, but it does not block blue light itself.
That’s why we’ve chosen not to make a “blue light protection” claim, even though we could have.
Does Age Defence protect against infrared (IR) radiation?
Infrared (IR) radiation (especially IR-A) penetrates deeper into the skin than UV or blue light, contributing to heat stress, oxidative damage and accelerated skin ageing.
Infrared radiation cannot be blocked by traditional sunscreen filters, physical or chemical. There are currently no approved cosmetic ingredients that reflect or absorb infrared light in the way sunscreen filters protect against UV. Skincare products support the skin’s resilience to infrared-induced stress through actives. Age Defence contains a powerful antioxidant complex including: tocopherol (vitamin E), carotenoids, polyphenols and DNA repair enzymes. These ingredients don’t block IR but help defend against oxidative stress, inflammation and mitochondrial damage that IR exposure can trigger.
We’ve chosen not to make the “infrared protection” claim because no skincare product can truly block infrared.
